Dear Music Colleagues,
The "powers that be" in Frankfort are in the process of deciding on the accountability system in our schools. As of now, the arts are part of that system. However, there is a chance that the arts could not be included in the assessment plan. Our music association is encouraging everyone who believes music in our schools is a must for our children's "whole child " education should attend the Commissioner's town meeting on April 21, 2016 at Seneca High School from 6:30-8pm. We just need people to attend to show the Commissioner that parents and students believe the arts are important. There will be an open mic session if you or a parent or student would like to speak. We know the importance of music in the schools. But the voices of our music parents and students are the voices that administrators and others with the power to make changes need to hear. Please encourage your students and parents to join you at this meeting. Your presence and the presence of your parents and students are invaluable.
We have seen the elimination of quality music education in our schools, even with assessment and accountability in place. I can’t imagine what might happen if there is no accountability in the state’s assessment plan for our arts programs. Looking forward to seeing you there. Wear your school’s music shirts or other music bling to show your support for music education. Pam
